The university has a long history. With the approval of Hebei Provincial people's Government in 1956, Hebei Junior College of Chinese Medicine was built in Baoding; merged with Hebei TCM Training school in 1958 and named as Hebei College of Chinese Medicine. It moved to Tianjin in 1962 and merged with Tianjin College of Chinese Medicine, then moved to Shijiazhuang in 1969 and merged with Hebei Medical College to form Hebei New Medical University. Hebei College of Chinese Medicine resumed its independent in 1983. In 1995, it merged with Hebei Medical College and Shijiazhuang College of Medicine, so as to form Hebei Medical University. The university was independent with the approval of the Ministry of Education in April 2013. In october 2014, The people's Government of North Province signed with the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine(SATCM) signed an agreement that Hebei University of Chinese Medicine became a university co-sponsored by the province and the state administration. In November 2014, it was identified as a provincial backbone university.
